“Within my work, I have examined the idea that throughout time artisans have continually memorialized and celebrated battles and heroic acts. Embroidered images from the Bayeux Tapestry and the Japanese warrior figures appear in my work as a way of questioning the true measure of war. In my opinion, romanticizing war negates the dreadful human price that must be paid by society.”

Mythmakers

Creators of mythology have defined the human experience in both its practical and spiritual manifestations. Throughout the ages, artists, writers, philosophers and theologians have attempted to define what it is to be human. At the root of this obsession is an attempt to understand the place of human beings in the spiritual order of the universe as well as in their dominance of the natural world.The profound influence of mythology on society and it’s value system, became clear to me when I studied a course at The University of Toronto “The Mythological Framework of Western Culture” offered by Northrop Frye. The influence of the Bible, its myths and  stories have appeared throughout the last two thousand years in visual art, poetry, plays, fables and iconic story telling. In my work, religious imagery and warrior figures are a reflection of this influence.
